The Eiffel Tower is a famous landmark located in Paris, France. The site around the Eiffel Tower is known as the Iron Lady. The Eiffel tower was completed in 1889 and opened to the public at the Worlds Fair of the same year. A little-known fact is that the original color of the Eiffel Tower was red! Gustave Eiffel, who designed the tower, built himself an apartment on the top level of the structure. Thomas Edison was one of the few people who had permission to visit the apartment. Gustave Eiffel performed experiments by dropping items attached to a cord from the tower to observe how items fell. The third level of the Eiffel Tower held laboratories for astronomers to work and research. Today, the Eiffel Tower has many shops and restaurants at its base. 20,000 lightbulbs light up the tower at night. It has wind turbines on the second floor to help generate electricity for the attractions and it even has a funnel for rainwater to collect water for the plumbing.
