Martin Luther King Jr. was born in Atlanta, Georgia on January 15th, 1929. Throughout his childhood, he felt the repercussions of the unfair civil rights laws and segregation. King was one of the most well-known civil rights activists. He dedicated his life to fighting segregation. King believed that the best way to fight segregation was to do it peacefully. King and his wife Coretta Scott King both led protestors in a march to Montgomery, Alabama in a campaign for African American voting rights. On August 28th in 1963 Martin Luther King delivered his, "I Have a Dream" speech at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. King's consistent efforts and his followers brought change to America. Lyndon B. Johnson shook King's hand at the signing of the Civil Rights Act in 1964. Later that year on December 10th, King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in the civil rights movement. To celebrate his life and achievements, president Ronald Reagan created Martin Luther King Jr. Day which falls on the 3rd Monday in January.
